Four Supreme Court Justices Might Retire
In the next four years, either President Obama or a President Romney will almost certainly have an opportunity to select at least one and perhaps has many as four or five justices for the US Supreme Court.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a Clinton appointee, is a two time cancer survivor who will turn 80 in March.

Ø  RB Ginsburg, Clinton, 79
Ø  Kennedy, Reagan, 76
Ø  Scalia, Reagan, 76
Ø  S. Breyer, Clinton, 74
Ø  Thomas, HW Bush, 64
Ø  S. Alito, W Bush, 62
Ø  J. Roberts, W Bush, 57
Ø  S. Sotomayor, Obama, 56
Ø  E. Kagan, Obama, 52

Four  justices will turn 80 during the next presidential term:  Ginsburg, Scalia, Kennedy, Breyer.  And by all accounts Clarence Thomas does not like the job, so he could surprise us and retire at any time.

We can see that the current court includes four justices who were nominated by a Democratic president and five who were nominated by a Republican president.  Of the four turning 80 two were nominated by a Republican and two by a Democrat.

Bush v Gore was decided 5-4
Citizens United was decided 5-4
Affordable Healthcare Act was decided 5-4

Big cases to watch on the court in the near future may include new challenges to Obamacare, gay marriage, voting rights, and Commerce Clause powers, among others.
