Trump as Trope
It is difficult, sitting within the crud storm that is the daily indecency of donald trump, to step back and see him as one point on a continuum.

Yes, he is ignorant and crazy and narcissistic. Yes, he has lied more than 1,000 times since being elected president. Yes, he is winning.

He is also a voice for forces who favor the free market over democracy. One version of the Republican Party platform, liberty over all, taken to an extreme. And contrasts with one version of the Democratic Party's core identity: democratic decision making, social justice, and equality.
